Republicans gain seats in the Senate; Democrats take the House

It’s a mixed bag of an election for both major parties as the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives for the first time since 2010 while Republicans not only maintained control of the Senate, they gained several crucial seats in Missouri, Florida, Indiana and North Dakota. Democrats will now have more power to challenge President Donald Trump’s agenda for the remainder of his first term. Outside partisan takeaways, it was a historic night for women and minority candidates as they took massive electoral strides with big wins across the country. Several gubernatorial races, and the battle for Arizona Senator Jeff Flake’s seat, are still up in the air.

Wednesday is a day for civil workplace discourse no matter the results

It’s the first day back in the office after the midterm elections and no matter what side wins, the results might be met with gloating, anger, frustration or worse from co-workers. During the last presidential election, politics created divisions in the workplace and even sparked some violent incidents. Co-workers can — and do — have other viewpoints that are just as valid as your own. Our HR expert says that workplace leaders need to be proactive and “vigilant about reinforcing their values and expectations” regarding inclusion and respect for diversity of thought, especially on Wednesday as maintaining civil discourse continues to be very important.

Mysterious space object could be alien?

It’s been dubbed a comet, an asteroid, and a new class of interstellar object. Now, a paper from Harvard astronomers suggests a mysterious object floating through space could be an Alien probe. Researchers attempting to explain the unusual acceleration of the object, nicknamed “Oumuamua,” say solar radiation pressure could be the reason it’s moving at high speeds. “A more exotic scenario is that ‘Oumuamua’ may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth vicinity by an alien civilization,” reads the paper.
